Description
Description: Item/Description: Original Mid-Century Modern abstract painting "First Flower" by New York artist, Robert Berger., Titled and date on stretcher bar: #45 First Flower 1970. Signed lower right: Berger.
"Robert Berger is unique among artists on the contemporary New York Scene. Eschewing the modish, and going his own way, he created a body of work that represents a fresh and original fusion of Abstract Impressionism and Representational Painting.
These are paintings of dazzling color and raw beauty, and he offers the viewer a strange, wholly personal vision of the world" – Joseph Le Seuer Critic Formerly of Village Voice.
And from Art Critic John Canaday - “Revelling in Paint" from Art Speak 1985: “One of the most uninhibited figurative expressionists this reviewer has come across in quite some time is Robert Berger, showing his work of the past fifteen years at his own living loft, …West 46 Street on March 4-13. Paint is Berger’s passion and he piles it on hot and heavy in vortex-like impastoes out of which figures emerge. Many of them are voluptuous female nudes who seem to be revelling in their own flesh, just as Berger does in the thickly encrusted paint with which he creates them. In many of the large canvases, energy lines zoom out from the center, suggesting perspective, but this is contradicted by the way the figures hug the picture plane. With the same muscular conviction, Berger also paints religious subjects, such as “Birth of Christ" and “Garden of the Gods", a painterly flowering which has intensity reminiscent of Van Gogh’s sunflowers."
